Jochen Sandig was born in Esslingen am Neckar. In 1990, he moved to Berlin to study psychology and philosophy. After the founding of the Tacheles Art House in 1990, he co-founded Sasha Waltz & Guests in 1993 with Sasha Waltz. In 1996, he established the Sophiensæle in Berlin-Mitte as an independent production venue for dance and theater, which he directed until the end of 1999. From 2000 to 2004, Jochen Sandig was a member of the Artistic Direction at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin. Since 2004, he has been the director of Sasha Waltz & Guests GmbH. Along with Folkert Uhde, he founded the Radialsystem on the banks of the River Spree in 2006 as a “space for arts and ideas.” In 2010, he was awarded the title “Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.” In February 2012, Jochen Sandig made his directorial debut with “human requiem,” a production of Johannes Brahms’ “Deutsches Requiem” with the Rundfunkchor Berlin conducted by Simon Halsey. The production has toured various cities worldwide and received the prestigious “Classical Next Innovation Award 2016.” As part of his commitment to societal issues, Jochen Sandig is one of the co-founders of the World Human Forums in Delphi, Greece. Since the 2019/20 season, he has been the artistic director of the Ludwigsburg Palace Festival – International Festival of Baden-Württemberg. In 2022, Jochen Sandig was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in Germany.
